Futureminds - Emotional Wellbeing in Schools ...
Futureminds is a social enterprise which means that any profits made are reinvested in community services.
Future minds is a psychology service specialising in adolescent and child mental health and offers training, assessment, therapeutic intervention, family and group work within schools colleges and other educational establishments.
Solution focussed approach in schools
Futureminds have devised a solution focussed approach in schools with the support of Dr Linda Metcalf a leading authority in this area as well as an international authority and author of several books on school solutions. The approach has been rolled out to several secondary schools in the midlands area, using a bespoke package of support according to the individual needs of each school. The approach builds positive relationships between teachers and students (particularly those students that may be hard to reach) and has been instrumental in reducing teacher stress. This approach has been noticed by head teachers as having a positive impact on the school which was noted by Ofsted.
Emotional well-being groups
Futureminds have been running emotional well being groups as part of Tamhs. The groups are fully evaluated using pre and post measures filled in by parents and teachers as well as weekly feedback from the children. The results are extremely positive with parents and teachers noticing a significant improvement in the child's behaviour at home and school. Our work has included working with parents prior to the group so they are encouraged to support their child as well as learn the 'parent traps' that they can so easily fall into. Parents are then able to access the team whenever they want via telephone call. Head teachers also receive feedback on the groups progress alongside any safe guarding issues.
Supervision and consultation
Futureminds are aware of the difficult job that teachers and teaching assistants have in working with students who have various needs. We recognise that sometimes taking a different approach when managing these difficult issues can aid in personal development and lead to a solution focussed rather than problem focussed approach. We have been able to facilitate a support circle where professionals working with a particular difficulty are encouraged to present the case/difficulty to a supportive group and where the group can aid, reflect and develop strategies for moving forward. Along with these support circles we are able to provide consultation and supervision on mental health issues on a regular or adhoc basis. This approach has been endorsed by Abingdon and Witney college.
Family mediation
Working with the family is the most effective way of making changes to a child's potential particularly in their capacity to learn. Bringing a child and their family into the School setting and working therapeutically with them can make a big difference to behaviour in the classroom after only 4-6 sessions. Futureminds have been working with children and families in this manner with families who have been deemed by the school as hard to reach or unwilling to engage. However, being a neutral and independent agency has allowed parents to contact us in a way that would have been difficult had we been part of the school.
Parenting support/information groups
We have found that many parents that we have come into contact with have expressed a desire to attend more parenting support and information groups. As Triple P Facilitators (link) we are able to provide 4 face to face sessions followed by telephone consultation which has helped parents understand meaning behind children’s a and the ‘parent traps’ that all parents will fall into at times. Although schools were unsure whether parents would attend such groups they were in fact well attended even by those parents who normally find it difficult to engage.
